Ever since IKEA burst onto the scene all those years ago, the UK’s been obsessed with Scandinavian design. But with a Finnish shop like Iittala in our midst, it’s not hard to see why.
Proudly peddling every bit of moreish design indulgence from Moomin Mugs to Alvar Aalto vases and homeware, the philosophy behind the shop is that design should be the opposite of disposable.
At the moment, my favourite (not altogether affordable) obsession is Iittala’s stock of bird-themed designs.
Firstly, there are the astonishingly richly coloured Taika mugs and teacups, with gorgeous intricate designs and smooth form suitable for everyday use thanks to the combined efforts of Klaus Haapaniemi and Heikki Orvola. Oh, and there’s a sleek fox or two in among the featured feathered friends as well, just in case you’re not a bird fan.
Secondly is the collection I always stand a respectful foot away from so that it is not destroyed by my outrageously klutzy tendencies: Birds by Penttinen.
This stunning array of delightful glass ornaments doesn’t come cheap - I’ve seen birds priced at £200 plus - but it really does speak for Iittala’s campaign ‘against throwawayism’ since there’s no way you’d get tired of seeing this adorable flock around the house.
Plus, don’t you think Nightbird (pictured) really matches BitchBuzz’s design palette?
You really get the best of Iittala’s dribble-worthy stock by visiting a branch in person, so head to Regent Street on the double.
