My Favorite Autumn Meal: Sourdough Bread Bowls

By Cate Sevilla

A BitchBuzz Classic! I originally shared this with you last year, but thought as it's Autumn and a bit cold outside, this would be the perfect dinner for you tonight!

For all you lovely lasses that grew up in northern California, or are living there now, this post goes out to you and all of the glorious foods and scrumptious forms of locally grown and globally loved produce you have at your fingertips. You may not realize it now, but you are spoiled, girlfriend.

The sheer amount of variety and quality foods you have is amazing. Don't believe me? Walk into your local Safeway and just take a gander at how beautiful the apples are. How orange the oranges are. How crisp the 8,987 different kinds of vegetables look.

You can munch on Monterey Jack Cheese, and sip on Napa Valley wines whenever you so wish - and you are damn lucky!

But, today, I would like to focus on my biggest love from northern California, and more specifically, from San Francisco:

Sourdough bread.

Words cannot express how much I love sourdough bread. I could eat sourdough bread smothered in I Can't Believe It's Not Butter for every single meal. Plus, I could quite easily incorporate sourdough bread in pretty much any meal I'm having, which is why I have a fierce love of bread bowls.

I mean, hello. They're bowls THAT ARE MADE OF BREAD.

Just think of how many things you can put in those puppies!

Spinach dip, chili, artichoke dip, massive amounts of Ranch dressing, a salad, Cheerios, pasta, noodles, or - my favorite - your favorite soup.

And that, my friends, is what I'm here to talk to you about today: the glory of soup bread bowls.

Those of you in the UK may have had some form of this in the past - but I promise you, until you've had one from the Boudin Bakery in San Francisco, or a homemade one using Colombo sourdough bread, you have no idea.

So, my Californian ladies, (and those of you all around the US) here is how to make your very own soup bread bowl which is, in my opinion, the perfect companion to a warm, cosy, Autumn evening in.

Ingredients

1 Sourdough Round, 1lb or smaller

1 can of soup

(Or, if you're like our amazing Laura Silver, you'll probably want to make your own soup, but I'm too lazy for that shit. I <3 Cambells.)

Directions

Once your soup is either warmed up in the microwave, heated up on the stove, or finished being made from scratch because you're an over achiever - gut your sourdough bowl.

Cut a circle on the top of the bread, like you would if you were carving a pumpkin.

Scoop out most of the bread inside, and put it on the side in a bowl or plate so you can use the bits to dunk in your soup later.

Pour your soup into the now shelled out bread bowl.

Enjoy!

See? Isn't that ridiculously easy? What won't be so easy, is getting up from the table or couch when you're done eating it.

If you'd like to buy a Boudin Bakery Bread Bowl, you can do so online or at one of their many locations. Or, if you're looking for a few soup recipes or ideas on what to do with your bread bowl, Colombo have some fantastic ideas on their website.

I've never forgotten my first clam chowder in a sourdough bowl in San Francisco when I was fifteen! Ah... nostalgia with food...

Warms my heart to see someone else appreciating good bread. If you're ever considering a trip to Bavaria (Germany) check out this bakery:

http://www.hofpfisterei.de/index.php (website is in German)

They also sell online.

That sounds awesome! Thanks for the recommendation! :) There's nothing better than good bread. (Except maybe good cheese and good beer.)
