As today is the last day of National Cupcake week, we’d thought we’d draw it to a close by featuring another one of our favourite cupcakeries: Crumbs & Doilies!
If you’ve been to the Covent Garden Real Food Market, there is no doubt that you will have spotted Crumbs & Doilies fabulous cupcakes.
Sam from Crumbs & Doilies tells me that its founder, Jemma, used to run a weekly stall every Sunday at the Sunday Upmarket, where she would make and sell everything from cupcakes, to biscuits, and shortbread – in addition to baking for her friends in her spare time!
Jemma found that she was soon selling more cupcakes than anything else, and she decided to make a proper business out of selling her fabulous and increasingly popular cupcakes.
This is when Sam came on board to help Jemma with her website, and then things quickly grew from there.
Three years later, Jemma now has a team of skilful bakers and decorators to help with their massive amount of orders, and while the Crumbs & Doilies team say that their classic vanilla cupcake is their most popular, the team’s personal favourite cupcakes are usually their most unique flavours:
- Chocolate Guinness
- Raspberry Ripple
- Cardamom and White Chocolate
- This month's flavour: Lemon and Poppyseed with cream cheese frosting
What I love about Crumbs & Doilies is that they come across as being so personal, and that every cupcake is made with, well, love. Jemma started C&D out of her love for food and baking, and the entire cupcake making team all feels the same.
Sam tells me what also sets C&D apart from all of those corporate cupcakeries, is how much their care about their customers:
“We love to make other people happy. Whether our customers are picking up a mini cupcake from the Covent Garden stall on their lunchbreak or ordering a tower of 500 for their dream wedding it's great to see and hear about people's reactions to the look and the taste of their cupcakes.”
And isn’t that what it’s all about, really?
