The Problem with Etsy and Craft Fairs

A few years ago, buying handmade or second hand goods was exciting and green. However, lately, it's become quite annoying. Searching for something on Etsy these days can be, well, difficult. I see my friends on Pinterest find the cutest things on there. My friends in real life have gorgeous hand knitted scarves and woollen hats that they’ve purchased from sellers on Etsy. However, when I go o...

Why Crocheting is Cool (No really)

Some things are just so very cool. You know – like surfing off the Australia coast. Or being in a successful rock band. Or, you know, crochet. OK, so perhaps this isn’t quite accurate. Of all the cool things in the world, I doubt that crochet is high up on the list. It is, mistakenly, seen as an activity for grannies, the sort of strange crafty activity that is only undertaken by the infirm. It isn’t the sort of thing that people expect to see being done at the pub by a young an...

Why Autumn Cooking is both Easy and Healthy

Autumn always brings warming foods to life. Soups, casseroles, stews, roasts. Anything that is going to warm the cockles after a blustery rainy or cold day, and anything that is cooked in one pot is great. Not only is it a simple cooking method, but it can be really nutritious and healthy. Even the most inexperienced cook can make a wonderful meal for the family or for one, with lots of leftovers that can re-heated the following days for either lunches or evening meals.

Getting in to the Thanksgiving Spirit

There are too many reasons to enumerate why I’d love to live in the US if only I could, but Thanksgiving is definitely one of them. The UK might have seasons of mists and mellow fruitfulness, but the US has a sort-of prelude to Christmas (even if they’re nothing to do with each other) complete with turkey and trimmings, family gatherings and other warm, wintery goodness. I generally try to make up for the lack of it by making industrial amounts of pumpkin pie with extortionately priced ...

Reinventing a Dud: a Better Green Bean Recipe

The French claim to have the best cooking, ingredients and taste, so why is there so much canned food consumption? This fresh green bean & shallot recipe will teach them a thing or two about flavorful side dishes and quickly spruce up your plate! For a people that have tried to resist the on-the-go style of eating, symbolic of the current Anglo-Saxon lifestyle, and prioritize home-cooked sit-down meals around a table lovingly adorned with loads of b...

Vegan Nibbles: Baba Ghanoush

Over the weekend, my mother shoved a container of roasted eggplant at me with pleading eyes and shouted, “Do something with this!” I answered, “Whatever do you mean mother? How could you not love unsalted, unspiced, cold eggplant?” Bleh. Luckily cold, tasteless mush can quickly and easily turn into delicious, creamy baba ghanoush with practically no effort whatsoever!

How to Become a Slow Cooker Goddess

There’s simply no other way to put it: I am a lazy cook. I tend to limit myself to things. With the weather turning colder, and because I work from home, I’ve become drawn to the kitchen: not just for hot tea and snacks, but also for using my slow cooker to make a delicious meal and fill my house with a savory scent.

Handmade Home: Dishware & Ceramics on Etsy

Some people have immaculate dishware in their home: everything matches, nothing is chipped, and it’s probably worth more than my car. I am not one of those people. I love mismatched dishes and accent pieces, especially when it comes to teacups, serving bowls, and platters. Not being gifted at throwing ceramics on a wheel, instead I have grown my collection of mismatched wares through craft fairs and second hand shops.

Vegan Nibbles: Dairy-Free Chocolate Truffles

I got hooked on the idea of making homemade truffles a few weeks ago. I talked and talked and talked about it to everyone I knew, until finally, I blocked out a Saturday evening and got to chocolatier-ing. I’m not going to lie, this process takes time. And while I almost lost a finger (chocolate chopping) and a toe (kitchen dancing) the time and effort necessary were totally worth it.

Snarky Office Supplies from Knock Knock

Like many of you out there, I find stationary and office supplies to be one of the finer things in life. Yes, aged wines, a good cheesecake and a bit of Westwood are all well and good, but there is something about a fresh pack of Post-Its that makes me giddy with glee. I've mentioned before how much I love the office supplies from Knock Knock, and they have some new products in...
