It is too late to deny that Christmas is pretty much here. Suddenly we are merely days away from December, and judging by the fact that it is bloody freezing outside, I should have started my Christmas shopping months ago.
Along with the present buying and the inevitable getting trapped in mile long queues, you also have to worry about the decorating the tree and making your living room into a grotto of wonderful glittery craziness.

Come Thanksgiving I am overrun by pumpkin. Pumpkin treats for the roommates, pumpkin pie for family dinner, pumpkin spice lattes for me. Somehow, when all the pumpkining is through and I’m putting the last pie in the oven there is always pumpkin leftover.
At first I took to baking mini-pies, but that requires making mini-crusts, and making crusts for leftovers when you’ve already been baking all day is way too much of a hassle. So, my laziness and thrif...

A friend and I were joking the other day that without Clarissa Explains It All, I could have been a completely different person. I was entirely obsessed with Clarissa Darling as a kid and however consciously or subconsciously, this childhood fixation laid out my entire life.
For example: I played the flute, grew to love The Violent Femmes, moved to New York City for college, majored in journalism, became a vegetarian, and had a boyfriend named Clifford Spleenhurfer (possible...

A few years ago, buying handmade or second hand goods was exciting and green. However, lately, it's become quite annoying.
Searching for something on Etsy these days can be, well, difficult. I see my friends on Pinterest find the cutest things on there. My friends in real life have gorgeous hand knitted scarves and woollen hats that they’ve purchased from sellers on Etsy. However, when I go o...

Some things are just so very cool. You know – like surfing off the Australia coast. Or being in a successful rock band. Or, you know, crochet.
OK, so perhaps this isn’t quite accurate. Of all the cool things in the world, I doubt that crochet is high up on the list. It is, mistakenly, seen as an activity for grannies, the sort of strange crafty activity that is only undertaken by the infirm. It isn’t the sort of thing that people expect to see being done at the pub by a young an...

Autumn always brings warming foods to life. Soups, casseroles, stews, roasts. Anything that is going to warm the cockles after a blustery rainy or cold day, and anything that is cooked in one pot is great. Not only is it a simple cooking method, but it can be really nutritious and healthy. Even the most inexperienced cook can make a wonderful meal for the family or for one, with lots of leftovers that can re-heated the following days for either lunches or evening meals.

There are too many reasons to enumerate why I’d love to live in the US if only I could, but Thanksgiving is definitely one of them. The UK might have seasons of mists and mellow fruitfulness, but the US has a sort-of prelude to Christmas (even if they’re nothing to do with each other) complete with turkey and trimmings, family gatherings and other warm, wintery goodness. I generally try to make up for the lack of it by making industrial amounts of pumpkin pie with extortionately priced ...

Over the weekend, my mother shoved a container of roasted eggplant at me with pleading eyes and shouted, “Do something with this!” I answered, “Whatever do you mean mother? How could you not love unsalted, unspiced, cold eggplant?”
Bleh. Luckily cold, tasteless mush can quickly and easily turn into delicious, creamy baba ghanoush with practically no effort whatsoever!

There’s simply no other way to put it: I am a lazy cook. I tend to limit myself to things. With the weather turning colder, and because I work from home, I’ve become drawn to the kitchen: not just for hot tea and snacks, but also for using my slow cooker to make a delicious meal and fill my house with a savory scent.
