Tasty Quickie: Garlic and Spinach Stuffed Mushrooms

I found myself in possession of some portabella mushrooms this week, and on observing their deep concavity, concluded that the best thing to do, would be to stuff them.Ricotta cheese works especially well as a filling because it has the ability to withstand a hot oven without melting all over the place. With spinach, onions and garlic added to the mix, you are left with a delicious and flavoursome topping.

Herbivorous: Gnocci w/ Squash, Sage & Blue Cheese

Something I have noticed since giving up meat, is that it is not necessarily the meat that makes a meal taste so good, but the ingredients used to flavour it. One of the most common uses of sage is with pork, and when I roasted up some butternut squash with a bit of sage this weekend, I realised that it was the herb rather than the beast that had made me love roast pork all along. Good for me, good for the pork.

Kelly Hoppen & Hotpoint Want You House-Proud!

What does your kitchen look like?Is it clean, tidy, and as if you have Martha Stewart hiding in your pantry?Would you be more than happy for your inlaws to come into your kitchen right at this moment, and serve up a dinner party?Yeah, me neither. In one of those ever popular surveys conducted by the UK’s most popular appliance brand Hotpoint, it was discovered that 12% of the people asked...

Tasty Quickie: Lazy Jam Tarts

I like a cupcake. They're just the right size, and they look quite pretty. But the way they're fetishised by adult women who like to pretend that their whole lives are vintage dresses, china tea-cups and whatever other form of infantile kitsch is currently du jour, (as opposed to the reality of Marlboro Lights, Jacobs Creek and Primark) kind of, you know, puts me off.

Meat Free Morsels: Aubergine Masala

This week, the first week of my month-long vegetarian trial, I braved dangerous territory and went to my favourite Indian restaurant. I always get tandoori chicken, which let's be honest there is no meat-free alternative for. I didn't think my veggie ways would last the evening, but last they did, thanks to the humble lovliness of the aubergine (egg plant for you yanks).

Liquid Cardboard: "It Was a Vase, and Now it's My Hat!"

The thing about inventions is that despite how cool and fun they might seem, you always have to wonder why. Why do we need that? What’s the point? And this is exactly how I feel about Liquid Cardboard.

Tasty Quickie: Hoi-Sin Pork Noodle Soup

A few years ago, I used to frequent a brilliant little noodle bar that did the best char sui pork noodle soup. There was something about the richly marinated pork, with the light, clear broth, that was just delicious. Combined with thick, udon noodles, and crunchy, fresh pak choi, it made for a really hearty and healthy dinner.

Tasty Quickie: Frito Pie!

Growing up, we ate some pretty recession friendly foods. From hotdogs covered in Velveeta cheese and smothered in baked beans, to “pizza” consisting of a slice of white bread, mayo, ketchup and a Kraft single – I’m not afraid of White Trash Cooking.

Tried and Tested: Emmi Caffé Latte

Earlier this week, I really fancied an Iced Coffee on the way to work, and popped into Starbucks for my personal favourite, the skinny iced mocha. And it cost me £2.10, for little more than ice and milk. The profit margin on them must be obscene. It probably costs Starbucks more to give you the cup than it does its contents!

Meat Free Morsels: Sweet Roasted Veg & Goats Cheese Pasta

Vegetarianism is a bit of a hot topic at the moment.  Whether you are concerned about ethical treatment of animals, the environmental implications of the meat industry, or simply can't afford to keep buying it in these economically  tumultuous times, there have never been more reasons to join the herbivores. Even if you can't bear to give ...
