Simple & Easy Ways to be a Perfect Hostess

Everyone dreams of being a great hostess. Well, not everyone actually – I know plenty of people who hate nothing more than the idea of pandering to every awkward guest’s whim, cleaning up after them and having to prepare all that food. However, many people do like the idea of throwing splendid parties that everyone enjoys, cooking scrumptious foods for the guests at dinner, or creating an event that has everyone talking for months.

Chocolate Peanut Butter & Banana Tartelettes

I tried to give up dessert for Lent. Yes, I am Jewish but I thought that by giving up something in solidarity with my Catholic friends I'd be more likely to exercise self-control. Well, that went out the window. Between cupcakes, tiramisu, Milano cookies and bits of chocolate here and there over the last couple of weeks, this test of self-restraint was an epic fail. Giving up foods does not work unless you're Catholic and then somehow you're able to endure the pain for at least 40 days...

Vegan Nibbles: Lentil and Quinoa Masala

After three days of basically eating cookies and cereal for every meal (life is hard sometimes, don’t judge), all my organs were screaming out for real food. Real food like vegetables, protein, grains and tinned lentils. Yes, tinned lentils. I didn’t know such a thing existed until I found a few cans at a crazy big grocery store. They exist all right,...

Vegan Nibbles: Creole Roasted Vegetables

Spoiler alert: I put Creole seasoning on everything. Also, I’m most lazy when I’m most hungry. Those two Yvonne factoids collided in last night’s dinner: Creole roasted vegetables. It had all the deliciousness of a long, labored over meal, yet all the effort of whacking on the oven and sitting in front of the television for forty-five minutes.

Perfect Books to Adorn Your Coffee Table With

I am an avid reader. I love the feel of paper turning under my fingers, the smell of a brand new tome being cracked open. I also have the ability to dive deeply and totally into the story, immersing myself so completely that my boyfriend can have real trouble dragging me back out and into the land of the living.

Road Testing the 5 Minute Chocolate Mug Cake

According to my ability to make a microwaved Potato Dauphinoise, one could say my microwave cooking skills aren't up to par.  However, for the sake of the famed microwave dish (depending perhaps, on your part of the world) currently gathering 138,249 fans on Facebook and climbing every minute, I've decided to see how good it is.

Vegan Nibbles: Baby Linzer Thumbprints

My favorite cookie of all time is the Linzer. It’s hard to find good vegan versions, and even harder to make good vegan versions. I try to use soy butter and other vegan butter substitutes as little as possible when I bake because, to me, the result always has a strange chemical taste. And without butter, a Linzer is not a Linzer.

5 Ways to Have a Quick & Nutritious Breakfast

Breakfast, the most important meal of the day. Why? Because it breaks the compulsory eating ‘cease and desist’ order placed on the body when it sleeps. Sleep is essential for the body to heal and repair itself, which is why it is so important to re-fuel within an hour of waking. And by that I mean eating, not having a coffee or a cup of tea to give yourself the energy to crowbar yourself out of the door and into the car or onto the train.

Vegan Nibbles: Minestrone Soup

I’ve been told that strange orange orb in the sky making me squint is in fact the sun. It appears, and I don’t want to jinx it, that spring might just be around the corner here in New York. With temperatures in the forties and even fifties (!) these past few days, the winter of my discontent might just be melting away.

Homemade Pea & Ham Soup

One of life’s pleasures, for me is eating a bowl of warm soup on a freezing cold winter’s day, the perfect winter warmer. I’m a huge fan of making my own soup as I am always shocked at not only the prices charged for fresh soup, but the ingredients used, as well.Even some of the ‘best’ soups aren’t exactly what they say they are. When you cook your own you are in control of the ingredients and know exactly what is going in there. And they don’t take any time at all. They really are a n...
