5 Ways to Have a Quick & Nutritious Breakfast

Breakfast, the most important meal of the day. Why? Because it breaks the compulsory eating ‘cease and desist’ order placed on the body when it sleeps. Sleep is essential for the body to heal and repair itself, which is why it is so important to re-fuel within an hour of waking. And by that I mean eating, not having a coffee or a cup of tea to give yourself the energy to crowbar yourself out of the door and into the car or onto the train.

Vegan Nibbles: Minestrone Soup

I’ve been told that strange orange orb in the sky making me squint is in fact the sun. It appears, and I don’t want to jinx it, that spring might just be around the corner here in New York. With temperatures in the forties and even fifties (!) these past few days, the winter of my discontent might just be melting away.

Homemade Pea & Ham Soup

One of life’s pleasures, for me is eating a bowl of warm soup on a freezing cold winter’s day, the perfect winter warmer. I’m a huge fan of making my own soup as I am always shocked at not only the prices charged for fresh soup, but the ingredients used, as well.Even some of the ‘best’ soups aren’t exactly what they say they are. When you cook your own you are in control of the ingredients and know exactly what is going in there. And they don’t take any time at all. They really are a n...

Vegan Nibbles: Tofu Salad

Before dropping meat from my diet, my favorite meal in the universe was a good sandwich. My mind would wander by ten o’clock with daydreams of tuna with lots of lettuce and tomato and the countdown to lunch would begin. Unfortunately, going veg means you’re shut out of a lot of sandwich staples. And the ones you’re left with are good for the first two weeks, but hummus gets boring quickly and roasted vegetables become just too fussy.

Sugary Drinks to Save the Soul

A while ago I stumbled into Whittard, maker of cups and teapots and "merchants of [many] teas and flavoured coffees", a shop I am not generally massively fond of.  They tempted me with tiny polystyrene cups, siplettes really, of flavoured drink, and caught me at my most vulnerable; thirsty and shopping with a final blow of a three-for-two style offer.

Vegan Nibbles: Chocolate Glazed Peanut Butter Cookies

There are few perfect pairs in this world: tights and smock dresses, gin and tonic, Kate Nash and Ryan Jarman, and of course chocolate and peanut butter.Ah, peanut butter. I don’t really get people who don’t like it. There’s a soul connection missing between a PB hater and me. While within the PB kinship, I can give a small nod to an eight-year-old as a way of saying, “Hey dude, I get you. What is that? Chunky? Roasted? Niiice.”

Vegan Nibbles: Lazy Night Stir Fry

I once heard a rumor that Martha Stewart eats SpaghettiO’s and beef jerky for dinner every night. While I’m pretty sure that isn’t true, I do believe after slaving away on gourmet recipes and “good things” all day long, the last thing she wants to do when she gets home is make a labor intensive, delicious meal.

Nothing Says "I Love You" Like Tequila: Patrón Cocktails

Tequila may not make a lot of people thing of passion and romance, but personally, I think there’s nothing more loving than someone buying me a shot of Patrón Silver. Only your enemy would buy you a cocktail or shot of something made with Jose Cuervo Gold.  (I gag and recoil in horror at the thought.)

Tasty Quickie: Stir-fry Stuffed Pancakes

Following recent, recurring trips to Viet Hoa in Shoreditch, I have developed quite the penchant for Banh Xeo, a Vietnamese dish involving a paper thin pancake, stuffed with crisp beansprouts, herbs, and either veg, tofu or a fatty meat such as pork.
