Amy Winehouse has reportedly spent a jaw-dropping £18,000 on Christmas decorations. The Christmas shop took place in London at the luxury department store Selfridges. Even at Selfridge’s prices that is a ton of tinsel. London should be prepared for a power surge when Amy turns her Christmas lights on.

If you are anything like me, then thinking of new present ideas is a difficult task. Don’t get me wrong – thee will always be those people for whom buying presents is a blessing, who have many hobbies and interests and who are so well known to you that instinct directs you to the right shelf. For all those other people, however, picking the perfect tie or generic DVD may just be one of the most painful (and not to mention ruddy boring) activities you have ever embarked on.

By January, you will most likely be sick of parsnips and other such root vegetables, but until then, you may as well embrace what's in season and enjoy them mashed, roasted, or in an aromatic, warming soup. The sweetness of parsnips lends itself especially well to being spiced, which is why curried parsnip soup has been gracing dinner tables since before Come Dine with Me was even a glint in the milkman's eye. This version, which roasts the parsnips with whole spices and honey, for a ri...

Mulled Cider seems to be the first Christmassy thing you're allowed to indulge in without people tutting and reminding you it's November. This is all very good because it tastes like heaven in a cup and everywhere it can be purchased from tends to be a warm wintery hideout. In short, even if you are a mulled wine sort of person, mulled cider should be investigated and is "very on trend" this season.

There are not many British institutions that I will wholeheartedly stick by. I couldn't give a shit about the Post Office and I intend to join my sister in working my way through her Michael Jackson karaoke CD while the Queen insincerely mumbles her annual speech on the BBC this Christmas. And don't even get me started on the BBC. Sunday roast however, is something I can get behind, and will wave a Union Jack at whilst humming the theme tune to

Thai food is delicious. There is sweet harmony in the combination of tamarind, scallions and ginger. Many Thai dishes are chock full of vegetables, making the cuisine a playground for vegetarians and vegans. But among those veggies, there is most often both egg and fish sauce lurking. By no means should you stop visiting Wagamama or SEA, but sometime...

For reasons known only to my mother, I was bought up to believe that ladies should not eat meat off the bone, and so I assiduously avoided chicken drumsticks and ribs for years. It was only a few months ago that I found myself confronted with a plate of spare ribs at a dinner party. What followed was like a reversal of that scene in Pretty Woman when Julia Roberts sends a snail flying across the fancy restaurant. Whilst everyone else gnawed on the juicy ribs like a pack of rav...

When my colleague Jacqui was flipping through Facebook pictures at lunchtime one day, I had to ask her to stop so I could stare over her shoulder. Her friend Jo’s cakes were so gorgeously decorated, I was instantly jealous. And hungry.Well, Jo, who is entirely self-taught, has now gone professional, and I have it on good authority from cake fans that her creations taste as good as they look. I dropped Jo a line to ask her about her new business…

Spaghetti and meatballs is a real crowd pleaser of a dinner, but whether you can be arsed to sit rolling mince into lots of little balls mid-week is quite another matter. This dish, which essentially involves chopped up sausages, browned and simmered in tomato sauce, sounds like a rather crude version of a classic, but seriously, don't knock it until you've tried it, as it is really rather delicious and very easy.
