Starbucks VIA Instant Coffee (It's Great for Cupcakes!)

By Cate Sevilla

While some of us may prefer to froth up our own milk and shell out the money for a home espresso machine, some of us would rather just stay home and make a coffee in three minutes flat, for a measly forty pence.

A lot of the instant coffees out on the market in the UK are, well, gross. A few of the more expensive brands are better, and if you throw enough milk and sugar in your cup of *joe* than you'll be able to suck down your morning dose of caffeine with the greatest of ease.

But Starbucks VIA Ready Brew instant coffee is actually pretty damn good, and incredibly affordable.

While I would usually much rather walk my ass down to my local 'Bucks for a soy chai tea latte than drink instant coffee, VIA is quality stuff. To be honest, it's not as good as making Starbucks drip coffee at home - but if instant is your game, I suggest picking up a packet of Starbucks VIA Ready Brew at your local grocery store.

(VIA is also convenient if you're too cheap to buy a latte at Starbucks, or purchase a home coffee machine.)

VIA comes in two flavors, Columbia - a milder, nutty blend, and Italian Roast, which has a richer, smoother flavor than Columbia. I've never been a fan of Columbian coffee as I find them a bit too acidic and nutty for me, but if that's your bag, Italian Roast might be a bit strong for you.

Also, while browsing one of my favorite websites, Bake & Destroy, I found a recipe for Starbucks VIA Italian Roast cupcakes!

The actual cake itself is made with a bit of cinnamon, vanilla, chocolate chips and a tablespoon of the VIA Italian Roast, with more brewed VIA Italian Roast in the buttercream frosting. Chocolate and coffee? In a cupcake? How amazing does that sound!?

God I love a creative baker.

Starbucks VIA Ready Brew is available from most grocery stores, £1.20 for a pack of three or  £3.95 for 12.

The Husband bought some whole Starbucks coffee beans he was unimpressed with. I 'recycled' them by melting milk and dark chocolate separately, stirring biscuit chunks, raisins and a generous sprinkling of the beans in each and then swirling them together on a baking parchment and shoving it in the fridge.

So, if you can't be bothered with baking...
