Toad in the Hole is one of those ridiculously stereotypical British dishes that actual British people pretty much never cook. This recipe then is perfect for you BitchBuzz readers both sides of the Atlantic. Our friends in the US can learn a yummy British dish, while you slackers in the UK can learn to cook something good and traditional, for the love of your Queen!
Toad in the Hole is a dish that can seem a bit tricky because it is quite easy to get wrong if you don’t have the oil hot enough. So long as you get the oil nice and hot though, the Yorkshire Pudding around the sausages should get nice and crispy. By roasting the sausages for a short while the oil in the tin should hopefully be hot enough by the time you pour the batter in anyway.
Serve with a pile of mash, some greens and gravy for a delicious winter warmer.
Ingredients (serves 4)
8 good quality sausages
75g plain flour
1 egg
75mls milk
55mls water
2 tablespoons olive oil
Directions
Sieve flour into a bowl and make a well in the centre. Crack egg into the well and whisk into the flour. Gradually whisk in the milk and water until smooth. Set aside.
Prick sausages and place into a metal roasting tin. Pour over olive oil and roast in the oven at 200C/Gas Mark 6 for 25 mins until sausages have started to brown and fat has begun to melt out.
Remove from oven and pour batter over sausages. Return to oven and bake for further 25mins until batter has browned and become crispy.
Cut into four pieces so that you get 2 sausages in each slice and serve with mash, greens and gravy.
