Tried and Tested: Emmi Caffé Latte

By Laura Silver

Earlier this week, I really fancied an Iced Coffee on the way to work, and popped into Starbucks for my personal favourite, the skinny iced mocha. And it cost me £2.10, for little more than ice and milk. The profit margin on them must be obscene. It probably costs Starbucks more to give you the cup than it does its contents!

We recently enlightened you to the ways of the Lavazza A Modo Mio Espresso Machine as a cost effective alternative to take-away coffee, which is great for working your inner barista at home, but not so great for on the go. However, there is more to good iced coffee than Starbucks it would seem!

If you’re in London, you may have noticed a sexy Italian man adorning Sainsbury’s delivery trucks. Well, said male is there to draw your attention to Emmi Caffé Latte, a range of fresh iced coffee available from most supermarkets. And for only £1.09 (59p at Sainsbury's at the moment!), a whole pound cheaper than Starbucks, for essentially the same thing. Caffé Latte is made with freshly roasted coffee beans, and real milk, so it actually is a proper iced coffee and not just a coffee flavoured Yazoo (not that Yazoo doesn’t have its place, but this isn’t it).

I tried the Cappuccino variety, which despite upsetting my pedantic sensibilities (I didn’t see any foam), was really delicious. The milk tasted really fresh, and the coffee nothing like instant. It has a bit of sweetness to it, which as a black no sugar drinker, I was not so used to, but in an iced coffee, I think it works, and it certainly wasn’t too sweet. The Cappuccino also only packs in 136 calories, which is not too bad for a milk based drink.

The Emmi range also includes the Choco Latte, which to put it simply, is pretty special. The texture is much thicker and more luxuriant than the Cappuccino variety and the flavour is somewhat similar to Galaxy milkshake. What makes it so great though, is that the hint of coffee gives it a good old caffeine boost, making it absolutely perfect for hangovers.

So next time you feel yourself drawn to a coffee shop, save yourself a pound and grab an Emmi Caffé Latte.
